Former Miami quarterback Robert Marve is considering walking on at Tennessee instead of accepting a scholarship at Purdue, according to sources familiar with Marve's options.

Marve loved the Purdue coaches during his visit and the chance to compete for the starting position in 2010. He came close to finalizing a decision to play for the Boilermakers last week. But he also long has been intrigued by the Vols.

Miami won't release Marve to Tennessee, Florida or LSU in the Southeastern Conference because it believes tampering occurred prior to his departure from the Hurricanes.


Marve is struggling with the choice, because he would have a chance to compete for the Volunteers' starting quarterback position in 2010, but would have to pay for school at Tennessee in 2009.

Marve's father, Eugene, said the choice was down to two teams, but would not name the two. He added that a decision likely won't be made until Friday or next week.

"There's a team that was thrown in, that we started investigating late and trying to get that information and put it against all the factors," Eugene Marve said.

"We took a semester off school to get this done and get it done right. So we think it's important to make the best and the right decision for him. He's taken his due process. We don't see this as a drag-along process. This is a month and a time that this decision should be made, because summer school starts next month and we want to be right on time with that."

The Volunteers, who have senior Jonathan Crompton and junior Nick Stephens, need quarterback help in the worst way and want to sign two in the 2010 class. Marve would at least give them somebody who has experience and could challenge Stephens. Plus, he would be able to practice with the team and learn the offense this season.

Marve started in 11 of the 13 games for the Hurricanes last season, but served two unrelated, one-game suspensions. The second suspension cost him the opportunity to play in the Emerald Bowl. He passed for 1,293 yards with nine touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

One of the prized signings in Miami's 2007 recruiting class, Marve missed his freshman season because of injuries he suffered in a car crash.

I must have missed something, that video for me shows the Colt McCoy sit down with Kirk Herbstreit.

I wouldn't mind Marve walking on we need bodies at QB, only 2 on the spring roster, of course he wouldn't be eligible until the 2010 season would he? By that time we will hopefully have either Scroggins, Heaps, or Hendrix coming in. That being said, I don't think he will ever play a down as a Volunteer.

I remember telling Mega that I loved the ball that Marve threw and thought he had pretty good potential, but, the other freshman came in this past year and just took that spot from him and played better down the stretch. I hate a two QB system and think that either would have done fine at Miami.

What are the "Canes" thoughts on Marve, I really don't know that much about him other than what he did at Miami.

Dude was a winner in HS. Per Robert Weiner (his HS coach at Plant in Tampa), he was a film-room rat with a big arm and a great work ethic to turn himself into a D1 prospect. He broke a lot of Florida records while in HS (some previously held by Timmay Teabag), and seemed to have the mix of skill, smarts, and work ethic to make it.

Before I say anything else, let me say this--I think his struggles at Miami not only had to do with him but also with Patrick Nix. Had Mark Whipple come in as an OC instead of Nix back in 2007, Marve may have progressed wonderfully and Jacory Harris may have had to redshirt and hope for 1-2 years of PT near the end of his time at Miami. Nix stunted his growth somewhat...but Marve was one of the few Canes to publicly defend Nix when it was obvious he was a horrible OC. Go figure.

BUT--if I had a dollar for everytime Marve threw into double/triple coverage thinking he could trust his strong arm to thread a needle--I'd be able to pay for lifetime Miami tix for as long as I live. He just doesn't have a knack right now for reading coverages nearly as well as Jacory Harris does. In the huddle--he wasn't a leader. He caused dissention in the locker room by wondering aloud when they were going to give the QB job to him full-time when Shannon said he wanted to play 2 QB's so he'd have 2 with experience instead of just one. Coming off of Kyle Wright's graduation/Kirby Freeman's transfer to Baylor, Shannon had Marve and Harris as his two QB's, and that was basically it--neither had taken a college snap before last season--so Shannon basically had no choice but to play them both so he'd have 2 QB's with experience in case one went down. Also, Marve did get into some legal trouble while at Miami for a minor destruction of property incident (he punched out his g/f's side mirror on her car during a fight)--and that got him suspended for the opener last season. His final demise came when he was late to class one to many times, and Shannon suspended him for the bowl game against Cal. Marve was pissed, as was his family, and blamed a lot of the situation on Shannon. Word close to the situation as far as people around Tampa & Plant HS that I've personally talked to said that Eugene Marve (his dad) and Robert Weiner started putting out feelers even before that last suspension to schools like UT, Florida, and LSU to see if he could transfer there and play. Those feelers put out were reciprocated at all 3 locations, and thusly why Shannon put them all on the schools he couldn't transfer to outright.

Purdue and UT are his two finalists. And the most messed up thing about the whole situation is this--Eugene Marve has blasted Shannon in the media, but at the same time said the reason he wanted Robert gone from Miami is because he saw he wasn't getting a fair shake in the QB battle between him and Harris (euphamistic way to say he was getting beat and wasn't gonna win the job like he thought he would). The other main driver that he said in several interviews had to do with his wife's health and with his own bout with prostate cancer--that he wanted Robert closer to Tampa & home. IF that really were the case, Marve would be walking on at UCF/USF/FAU/FIU instead of talking to schools in Indiana & Tennessee. Makes no geographic sense with that explanation.

Sorry so long--wanted to tell the whole story as I know it from a Canes perspective, and to make a long story short--athletic kid, big arm, not a great head when the bullets are flying live, and could be a character prima-dona issue off the field. Good luck if he comes to UT.

as far as mavre going to ut..if he does, i bet he plays more than crompton..shit you cant get any worse than crompton..

He may, but it would only be because he has more years left, but I doubt he plays more than Crompton. UT will hopefully have a better QB than Mavre in this recruiting class.
